Wisdom from the unwise.

Myself and the other grandkids went out with our Grandpa the other day (sunday, was it?). We saw Megamind, had McDonalds, drove around in his old VW bus. It was a good time.

Now here's the back story; my Grandpa lost my Grandma a few years back, and remarried another woman. I have no comment on his new wife, however, let me just say that ever since my Grandpa and he got together, a rift between him and the rest of the family has grown. It's been something like a year since I've been to his house, and I haven't seen her since their wedding.

With that, this is the first time I've spent time with my Grandpa in a very long time.

As I rode shotgun back to our house, we talked about my future, what I wanted to do for my career, we jumped on to the subject of my art, at which point he said to me: "Just do it man, don't let anyone keep you from it.".

Of course, you might think it was the obvious thing to say, but it still held more then the average "you can do whatever you want" saying. It went deeper, from the heart of a man with a seriously messed up family life, to his Grandson, who he rarely sees.

It reminded me of what my art teacher told me, that in order to be the best gift I can be (in her context, it was to my future wife.. but you get the point) I need to be successful in my art and keep perusing it and honing my talent.

It brought me to the idea, that, even though my Grandpa could have possibly maybe made some really bad mistakes, he still carries the wisdom of his age and experience. He still understands what's going on in his life, and knows that in order for me to have the fullest life I can have, I need to peruse the dreams God has set out for me.

He ended with "You know, your Grandma would be real proud of you guys, all of you, but especially you. She'd be proud of the man you've become."
